Hives, medically known as Urticaria (and referred to in Ayurveda as Sheetapitta), are sudden, raised, itchy welts or bumps that appear on the skin. Affecting up to 20% of children and adults at some point in their lives, hives can range from tiny, pencil-eraser-sized spots to large, elevated patches as big as a dinner plate.
While most acute outbreaks are harmless and resolve within hours or days, chronic hives (lasting longer than 6 weeks) can cause severe daily discomfort, sleep disruption, and emotional stress.
Hives occasionally occur alongside Angioedema (swelling deep within the underlying skin tissue) or Anaphylaxis (a severe, systemic allergic reaction).
🔴 SEEK IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE IF HIVES ARE ACCOMPANIED BY:
Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat
Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint (sudden drop in blood pressure)
Sudden nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps
Hives can easily be confused with other skin rashes like eczema or contact dermatitis. Common features include:
Intense Itching (Kandu): Ranging from mild irritation to severe, burning discomfort.
Transient Nature: Individual welts typically appear, fade, or shift location within 24 hours without leaving permanent marks or bruises.
Variability in Appearance: On lighter skin, welts often appear pink or red. On brown or Black skin, hives may match skin tone or appear subtly raised with dark purple/brown halos.
Deeper Swelling (Angioedema): Painful swelling around the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet.
In classical Ayurveda, hives are classified as Sheetapitta. Exposure to cold winds (Sheeta) combined with excessive internal heat (Pitta) and blood toxins (Rakta Dushti) causes an immediate eruption of red, burning, itchy wheals on the skin surface.
Managing hives effectively requires both immediate symptom relief and long-term trigger management.
Antihistamines: The primary first-line therapy to block histamine activity and reduce itching.
Biologics & Targeted Therapeutics: Prescribed for chronic hives unresponsive to high-dose antihistamines.
Short-Term Corticosteroids: Reserved for severe acute flare-ups to rapidly calm systemic inflammation.
Under senior clinical guidance at Satellite Surgical & Holistic Hospital, chronic hives are addressed from within:
Raktamokshana (Blood Detoxification): Removes vitiated blood toxins (Rakta Dushti) to stop recurrent skin hypersensitivity.
Virechana Therapy: Clears excessive Pitta heat from the liver and vascular system.
Herbal Blood Purifiers: Formulations containing Guduchi, Neem, Haridra (Curcumin), and Sariva to normalize immune responses naturally.
Avoid Known Triggers: Eliminate trigger foods, unprescribed painkillers, or harsh synthetic soaps.
Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose loose-fitting, lightweight cotton clothing to prevent friction and pressure hives.
Manage Internal Heat & Stress: Practice stress-reduction techniques and avoid sudden extreme temperature shifts (e.g., hot showers in cold weather).
Avoid Incompatible Foods (Viruddha Ahara): Refrain from combining milk with sour items or eating excessive salty/fermented foods, which aggravate Pitta.
